Sulawesi
is an oddly shaped island situated in the Northern of Indonesia’s
territory. Its four outstretched arms are in a sense all separated,
rise from the deep seabed formed by contiguous folds in the earth’s
crust but are isolated from one another by steep ravines, dense
forests and forbidding peaks.
Primarily this island was inhabited by two flamboyant tribes,
the highland Torajans who dominate the northern part of South
Sulawesi and the seafaring tribe of Bugis who dominate the area
of the southern tip of South Sulawesi. On the northeastern peninsula
of the island live the most western oriented people, the hospitable
and open minded Minahasans.
The Northern part of the island is rich in natural sources of
iron wood and ebony forest, wild orchid varieties and life of
wild rare animals. Marine Park of Bunaken is located in this region,
a famed site of diving offers its outstanding wealth of marine
life in the crystal clear water and it is the richest varieties
of corals and beautiful sea creatures. While in the northern of
South Sulawesi the highland of Toraja, Torajanese live in the
rugged peaks and fertile plateau. They are known for their elaborate
and colourful feast for the dead. The event of the funeral ceremonies
are remarkable with ceremonial dances and offerings of animals,
after which the deceased’s interred in caves hollowed out in the
high cliffs. Other alternative things to discover, from historical
remains, museum of archeological remains and manu script, etc.
to the unique shape of Torajanese traditional houses, seafaring
heritage and Pinisi schooners of Bugis and the magnificent landscapes
all await to be discovered.
